About Line 21

Carolyn Vetter Hicks

Director, Co-founder
Carolyn is the director and co-founder of Line 21 and has been working in the film and television industry for 19 years. She incorporated the company with Kelly Maxwell in 1994 and hasn’t looked back since. Working with language and communication was a natural fit. A master of languages, Carolyn is fluent in English, French, and German, and dangerous in Italian and Spanish… as well as Arabic, Flemish, Dutch… Try her.  She holds a BA in French and German literature and an MA in German literature. Carolyn is also a writer, currently working on a screenplay and novel treatment, and we never know what she’s going to do next.

Carolyn is the immensely skilled organizer behind the mammoth task of scheduling at Line 21, and is able both to schedule weeks at a time and turn a schedule on a dime. She is also a captioning rockstar, and holds the land-speed record for popon captioning, which she is able to defend at any time. Travel, great food and wine, and movies of the week and Canadian episodical drama are some of Carolyn’s passions, and her international trips keep her outlook fresh and her spirit youthful. An infectious laugh, huge sense of fun, and an adventurous nature in hair colour bring that point home. Carolyn loves learning something new each day and her work at Line 21 allows her to do that.

Some of Carolyn’s favourite credits include: Alice, Da Vinci’s Inquest, Intelligence, Glutton For Punishment, The Last 10 Pounds Boot Camp, Knowledge Series: The Royals and Poirot, and The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus.

Kelly Duncan Maxwell

Director, Co-founder
“The best part of my job,” reveals Kelly, “is working with great clients, engaging with their ideas, and using my knowledge to contribute to their projects.” After 18 years in the industry, she has had a chance to work with a large number of clients, and tries whenever possible to get out of the office so she can put faces to names. Kelly is the director and co-founder (in 1994) of Line 21 along with Carolyn. She holds a BA in Cultural Anthropology and a Master’s degree in French Cultural history, and is proud to be able to spell  Bakbakwalanooksiwae on demand. She is an unrelenting trouble-shooter, for which she would like to thank Mr. Vanags and the grade nine comp sci class that taught her flowcharting, and if she can’t figure out the problem, you can bet she knows someone who can. Kelly is a natural problem solver with boundless energy and a can-do attitude. That, coupled with her flawless grammar and the ability to meticulously proof-read, make her a valuable leader on the Line 21 team. With an incredibly diverse background, Kelly is a valuable wealth of knowledge to our group, and is called on for her “spidey senses” for dialogue as well as for her Macgyvering. She’s also responsible for some of the most memorable Christmas parties this side of the continental divide…but it does help to have the best staff anywhere. When not at the office, Kelly can usually be found with her husband and young family.

Some of Kelly’s favourite credits include: Stargate: Universe, Sanctuary, Ice Pilots NWT, Anna and Kristina’s Beauty Call and Grocery Bag, Who Killed Miracle, Dirt, Warrior Boyz, Shattered, cArtographies, Facing Ali, and Riverworld.

Leslie Foster

Script Department Supervisor
Leslie started in the film and television industry in 1997 after studying photography at Ryerson University. Her strong visual sense, tremendous speed, and attention to detail made her a great caption editor when she began working with Line 21 in 1998. As our script department grew, she stepped up to manage this whole service area, developing a huge roster of script formats on offer, as well as being able to interpret delivery contracts and customize to give clients exactly what they need. From raw footage transcription to CCSLs, Leslie’s crew can do it all, on time, and with the best quality in the business. Her strong desire to take on new challenges and forge ahead with new ideas is very appreciated at Line 21, where she is a natural process builder, number-cruncher, and leader with a dedicated and hardworking staff. She credits the unparalleled leadership, yet framework of freedom within the company that allows her to build these new ideas into profitable realities.

When not at work and whenever possible, a daring sense of adventure often finds Leslie far from home, camera in hand, and more than once wondering why that chicken she just ordered was served with paws.

Some of Leslie’s favourite credits include:  Stone of Destiny, Burning Candles: The Life Of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Stargate Atlantis, Beautiful Ohio, 50 Dead Men Walking, Nurse Fighter Boy, and Word Travels.

After the completion of two degrees in Applied Linguistics and Computer Information studies, she started her career in the IT department of Proctor and Gamble.  After a few years, she moved on to work as a research assistant at Japan’s leading robotic and neuroscience research institutions for four years. No, you don’t need to learn Japanese to talk to Yasumi. She will be pleased to chat with you about all your project’s needs in English, French, or Japanese.

Dawn Simpson

Senior Caption Editor
Having been with our company since 1998, Dawn has worn many hats at Line 21- she has done everything from captioning, scripting, and subtitling to employee hiring and training, marketing, scheduling, and project coordinating. So she knows our company– and the industry– inside out. She has a degree in Communication Studies and Women’s Studies, and brings her proofreading and customer relations experience to Line 21. She now spends all of her work time as one of our senior caption and subtitling editors, and will complete your project with a ridiculously meticulous eye.

Dawn now works from home in the backwoods of Ontario, having moved there in 2007. Dawn’s completion of her work in Ontario allows your Ontario production to be eligible for Ontario tax credits.

When not working, Dawn enjoys cycling and gardening and enjoying a quiet country life with her husband and two small children.

Some of Dawn’s favourite credits include: Shattered, The Guard, Stargate: Universe, Da Vinci’s Inquest, Word Travels, and pretty much any documentary she can get her hands on.

Siri Arnet

Caption Editor
Siri is an artist, musician, and TV junkie born and bred in Vancouver, BC.  While completing her Fine Arts degree at SFU, Siri worked as a production artist at the award-winning animation company International Rocketship, and so began a love affair with Vancouver’s film industry and the joys of visual storytelling.  After a stint with the administrative and funding side of film, she was looking to return to her roots and get her hands busy again, and so in 2002, she joined Line 21 as a caption editor, finding in this position what seems to her like the perfect balance of favourite things – story, learning, language, and sound.

The movies and tv shows I am lucky to caption are a fascinating window on the world.  They always teach me something new, and seeing the output of our local industry is a consistent source of artistic motivation.  I want to do all I can to help make each show the best it can be.”

When not working and voraciously watching television, Siri fills her time with ever-expanding creative projects.  As well as painting and textile work, Siri is a songwriter and recording engineer, and runs a small home recording studio, Neutral Planet Records, that produces singles, ep’s, demos and theme songs.

Some of Siri’s favourite credits include:  Sanctuary, Stargate (all of them!), Prime Suspect, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, and The 4400.
